Place: The Healing Garden classroom, The Rachel Carson Centre, Emerson College.
Each day, you will experience and explore sacred music from different places and times, from the sublime chants of Hildegard von Bingen and the joy-filled songs of the Llibre Vermell de Monserrat, to the magical sounds of John Tavener and the inspiration of contemporary gospel music.
Along the way you will experience the sounds of Dufay, Josquin des Prés, Tallis, Palestrina, Byrd, Monteverdi, Purcell, Handel, Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Bortniansky, Brahms, Fauré, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Stanford, Vaughan-Williams, Britten, Howells, Tippett, Berthier, Wier and more.
Anyone who loves to sing can take part, whatever their level of experience. We will be learning pieces by ear and there will be notated parts available for those who would like them.
We will explore techniques to help you find and develop your voice (everyone can sing, whatever they may have been told in the past), and will use fun methods to achieve a true sense of togetherness and musical ensemble.
We will also explore the ways that composers of sacred music through the ages created their unique sounds, and will listen to many wonderful examples of sacred signing.
But above all, each day is about singing and making music together, and experiencing the beauty, peace and exhilaration that choral music brings.
On the first day, registration and refreshments are from 9.00am in the Healing Garden classroom at the Rachel Carson Centre, Emerson College, Hartfield Road, Forest Row RH18 5JX.
Singing sessions will be from 9.30 to 12.30 and 2pm to 5pm with breaks for tea and coffee, and a lunch break from 12.30 until 2. Wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes that allow you to move freely.

About Nic Rowley
Nic was a choral exhibitioner at Trinity College Cambridge (under Richard Marlow), and trained with renowned baritone John Carol Case. He has composed for and directed choirs in the UK, France, Denmark South Africa and Mauritius, and has worked widely in television, radio and film as a musical director, composer, instrumentalist and singer. He was the music producer for the Government-sponsored Sing Up program which encouraged choir singing in schools throughout the UK as part of the Music Manifesto National Singing Program, reaching over 14,000 schools, and has been the vocal teacher and coach to many well known artists. As well as working as a baritone soloist for many choirs and choral societies, he was also co-founder of the renowned ACM gospel choir which has performed on countless recording sessions and for many national events.
